
Bengaluru based deep tech startup QOSMIC has raised $3.33 million in funding to develop what it calls an optical highway connecting satellites to Earth. The round was led by Accel in India and Prosus Ventures, with foundational and early support coming from South Park Commons, ARTPARK, and Manish Jain. The company is building infrastructure that allows satellites to transmit massive volumes of data back to the ground using laser technology instead of traditional radio links.
The Problem QOSMIC Is Solving
The global space industry is in the middle of a satellite boom. Over 100,000 satellites are expected to launch this decade alone, and together they generate petabytes of data every single day. The challenge, however, is not getting satellites into space. It is getting their data back down to Earth efficiently.
For the past century, the standard method for transmitting data from satellites has been radio frequency communication. Despite all the advancements in space technology, this core piece of infrastructure has barely changed. QOSMIC believes this is one of the most critical and overlooked gaps in the entire space ecosystem, and the company is positioning itself as the solution to it.
QOSMIC’s approach is straightforward in concept but deeply technical in execution. The company replaces outdated radio links with optical laser communication, enabling satellites to send data to Earth at speeds and volumes that radio simply cannot match. According to the company, its infrastructure delivers 100 times the throughput of traditional radio frequency systems, at a cost of just one dollar per gigabyte.
To make this work end to end, QOSMIC has built two core products. The first is Argus, a network of ground stations specifically designed to receive laser beams transmitted directly from satellites in orbit. The second is Zaphod, a terminal that can be fitted onto almost any existing satellite to enable laser based communication. Together, these two products make QOSMIC what it describes as India’s only full stack optical communications platform for satellites.
The entire operation is being built out of Bengaluru, positioning India as a meaningful contributor to next generation space infrastructure. With a global satellite launch wave already underway and data volumes only set to grow, the demand for faster and cheaper data downlink solutions is becoming increasingly urgent for satellite operators worldwide.
QOSMIC’s funding and product suite suggest the team is building not just for the Indian market but for the global space industry at large. With heavyweight backers like Accel and Prosus already on board, the startup is entering a space where the opportunity is enormous and the competition to define the infrastructure layer is just beginning.
