Medial, a platform built to connect founders, employees and investors across India, is shutting down. The announcement was made by its founder and CEO Niket Raj Dwivedi, who shared the news through a personal post describing it as a difficult decision.
Dwivedi explained that Medial was created with the goal of building a digital home for the startup community, one that could help bridge the gap between opportunities available in tier 1 cities and those in tier 2 and tier 3 cities. The core idea behind the platform was that access to information and networking should not depend on where a person is located.
Over its journey, Medial managed to build a strong base of users. The platform crossed 500,000 registered users and attracted people from more than 30 countries. It also gained visibility after appearing on Shark Tank India, and its founder was recognized on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list.
Beyond just numbers, Medial became a space where its own users found success. According to Dwivedi, several founders who were active on the platform went on to raise funding for their own startups, and some even appeared on Shark Tank India themselves with their products. The platform had also received funding support from well known investors during its run.
In his note, Dwivedi expressed gratitude toward his team, investors and users for standing by the company throughout its journey. He acknowledged that timing may have played a role in the platform not achieving its full potential, admitting that the company might not have gotten its timing right.
Despite the shutdown, he remained optimistic about the broader idea Medial was built on. He mentioned his belief that another young founder somewhere will eventually attempt the same vision and possibly execute it more successfully in the future.
Dwivedi also used the moment to reflect on his broader entrepreneurial journey, noting that he has been building startups for the past decade. He stated that regardless of the outcome with Medial, his passion for building companies remains unchanged and he intends to continue working on new ventures.
As for his immediate future, Dwivedi kept things open ended, stating that he does not yet know what his next step will be but promised to share more details soon. His post signals the end of one chapter for Medial, while hinting that his entrepreneurial journey is far from over.
The shutdown of Medial marks a significant moment in India’s startup ecosystem, especially for platforms aimed at community building and founder networking. While the platform’s run has come to a close, its impact on the users who built and raised through it, along with its founder’s continued presence in the startup space, suggests this may not be the last the industry hears from Dwivedi.
