Meesho Faces ₹1,500 Crore Income Tax Demand for FY 2023-24 Company Plans to Contest

Bengaluru-based e-commerce platform Meesho is under scrutiny after India’s Income Tax Department raised a substantial tax demand against the company. For the financial assessment year 2023-24, the tax authority has sought approximately ₹1,499.7 crore from the company, inclusive of interest charges. The demand was officially communicated through a formal assessment and demand notice under the Income Tax Act.

According to Meesho’s regulatory filing, the Income Tax Department made several additions and adjustments to the income figures submitted by the company, which resulted in this elevated demand. The company has disclosed the matter to stock exchanges as required under compliance norms.

Meesho has made it clear that it does not accept the tax authority’s findings and believes the demand is contestable on both legal and factual grounds. The company is currently reviewing the order and has indicated it will take appropriate steps to challenge it.

This is not the first time Meesho has faced such a situation. A similar tax demand was raised for the previous financial year 2022-23 as well. In that case, the Karnataka High Court stepped in and granted an interim stay on the demand notice in April 2025, and that matter is still awaiting final resolution.
